Self Reliance

My visiting teachers came to chat with me today. I love when they visit...adult conversation is always welcome! The message that they shared today was music to my ears.

It was entitled Becoming Self Reliant, which is exactly what I'm trying to do.

I think sometimes people view emergency preparedness/food storage as hoarding food or preaching doom and gloom, but it isn't that at all. It is simply being self reliant.

" 'Self-reliance means using all of our blessings from Heavenly Father to care for ourselves and our families and to find solutions for our own problems.' Each of us has a responsibility to try to avoid problems before they happen and to learn to overcome challenges when they occur. . . .

"How do we become self-reliant? We become self-reliant through obtaining sufficient knowledge, education, and literacy; by managing money and resources wisely, being spiritually strong, preparing for emergencies and eventualities; and by having physical health and social and emotional well-being."

I want to be prepared so that I have the means to take care of myself and my family come what may. I don't want to have to rely on the government, the church, or my family (or anyone for that matter) to get me through. I want to prepare now to avoid disaster later.

"Our ultimate goal is to become like the Savior, and that goal is enhanced by our unselfish service to others. Our ability to serve is increased or diminished by the level of our self-reliance."

I want to be able to help and bless the lives of others and I can be more prepared to do that by being self reliant.

When I was asked to take dinner to another family last week, it wasn't a burden or stress. I didn't have to make a quick trip to the grocery store (which is never quick with four boys in tow) or worry about it being a financial burden (which it could have been if I didn't have food on hand that I'd gotten on sale). Being able to happily serve is an unexpected blessings I've received in working to become more self reliant.

This article has helped to strengthen my desire to become more self reliant. I have a LONG way to go but I'm going.

CHEAP All Laundry Detergent

This week, Big Lots has their All 2X (50 oz) and All 3X (32 oz) on sale for 2/$5. Big Lots does not accept manufacturer coupons, but we should be able to price match this at Walmart or Target, and use the $3/2 coupon from 1-3-10 RP. The final cost will be only $1.00 each!

Some areas received $2/1 coupons. If you're interested in stocking up on detergent at an even lower price ($0.50 a bottle), you may want to consider buying some of these coupons online.

There are several sources for purchasing more coupons (and/or entire coupon inserts) for stock piling when prices are rock bottom or free:

Be sure to read the site's policies (for example at Dede's site there is a minimum purchase of $3.00) but I have been VERY pleased with all of my coupon purchases.

Wal-Mart Price Match Policy

The last time I was at Wal-Mart I tried to price match an item from the Smith's ad and was told I could not do so because the ad read "with your club card." The cashier told me that if it required a club card the price would not be matched.

I was confused but not in the mood to push it so I pulled my familiar line, "Okay, then I just won't get these." What stores were they planning on price matching? Lots of grocery stores have club cards!

I looked up the official price matching policy online today and although it says the manager has final say, it states they do honor "'Preferred Shopping Card' advertised prices."

I printed a copy of that baby out and put it in my coupon file. I'm planning on doing some price matching today and now that I have backup, I'm ready to roll. We'll see how it goes.

Scolari Coupon Doubling - Update

Remember the email I sent to Scolari's asking about their doubling policy? Well, here's the response I received:

Dear Natalie,

Thank you for visiting our website and contacting us with your question. The coupon will not double if it exceeds the price of the item, in your example if the coupon was doubled it will still exceed the price of one item. Our coupon policy states that we will not double if the coupon exceeds the amount of the item.

Scolari’s is proud to be the only grocer in Northern Nevada that doubles our customer’s coupons everyday.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,

Jamie DeBates
Scolari's Food & Drug Co.
(775) 331-7700 Ext 158

Hmmm...since I have to buy two of the item to use the coupon, I'm not getting one for free, I'm getting two for $1.79 or $0.90 each.

Not worth arguing about in my book, but be aware that this is how the register will read your coupons that say "$1.00 off 2" and I'm glad they at least responded.

Pork Tenderloin Recipes

The last time the pork tri tip went on sale at Scolari's I found these recipes to use that my family enjoyed.

Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin - Link to recipe HERE
I found this recipe online and LOVE the rub and bacon!

Pork Tenderloin
3 to 4 lb. pork tenderloin
3-4 cloves of garlic
1/2 c. soy sauce
1/2 c. sugar
1/4-1/2 tsp. ginger
Chopped green onions for garnish
Sesame seeds for garnish

Place tenderloin in glass baking dish (or gallon-size Ziploc bag). Combine garlic, soy sauce, sugar, ginger and pour over meat. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for several hours or overnight, turning a couple of times. Preheat oven to 325*. Cover meat with marinade and with lid or foil and bake about 2 hours. Remove foil last 15 minutes or so. Slice at angle. Place on serving platter and pour marinade on top. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds. Makes 6 to 8 servings.

Food Storage Plan - Step Three

It’s a new year and it’s time for me to buckle down on my goal of a year’s supply in a year.

I’ve already completed step one (my inventory) and I was able to check off step two (knowing what I still need) once the inventory was complete.

I’m left with step three (preparing a timeline). Click HERE to see the food storage ladder and the breakdown for the year, month by month. (View page 2 and remember to start at the bottom.)

The idea is to start at the bottom of the ladder and climb up, beginning with the events that are most likely to occur first. I found this food storage ladder idea at Filling Your Ark and have used it to organize my plan of attack!

Old Navy Clearance

Old Navy has an additional 50% off their clearance now through Monday (1/18). Use a coupon to get even lower prices! Deal Seeking Mom has the info. on where the coupons are hidden on the Old Navy site.

I used the $5.00 off $25.00 coupon and was able to get a shirt for myself, a pair of jeans and a work shirt for my husband, and four shirts for my boys...for $20.00!

(Thanks, Deal Seeking Mom!)

Scolari Coupon Doubling

I noticed today that not all of my coupons were doubling at Scolari's. After reviewing my receipt, it seems that my coupons that read "$1.00 off 2" were only doubling to the price of the item instead of $2.00.

Typically when a coupon is doubled and it would exceed the price of the item, the register only doubles the coupon up to the price of the item. (For example, if the item was $1.50 and you had a $1.00 off coupon, the coupon would come off for $1.00 and then double at $0.50, making the item free but not giving an overage.)

It looks like the register is doing the same thing for $1.00/2 coupons, thinking it would be an overage but not taking into account the purchase of two items! So I emailed Scolari's to see what's up. Here's what I wrote:

"I write a money-saving blog for Northern NV and I would like to clarify your double coupon policy. I've noticed that when a coupon doubles it will not exceed the price of the item, which is great.

"However, when a coupon reads "$1.00 off of 2" and two products are purchased, the register still only doubles to the price of one product. An example would be a product that costs $1.79 and I have a coupon for "$1.00 off 2". So I buy two of the product at $3.58 but the coupon only doubles to $1.79 instead of $2.00.

"Is this your policy or a glitch in the system? Please advise so I can let my readers know, as well as plan my purchases accordingly.
Thanks!
Natalie"

I'm curious to see if they respond and what the response will be. They'll probably think I'm some insane, coupon-crazed woman and they just might be right. I'll keep you posted.

(I also found their official coupon policy on the website and you can see it HERE.)

Cannery Price Changes

Just a heads up that the prices at the LDS Cannery are changing effective THIS Saturday (01/16). If you live here locally, that means you will only be able to can at the current prices on Thursday, as our cannery is only open on Saturdays and Thursdays.

From My Food Storage Deals:

"The items that will be increasing in price are the following:

*Dry Powdered Milk 25lb. $35.40 (up $10 from before--stock up NOW before the 16th to get the AMAZINGLY low price of $24.80!!)

*Hard Red Wheat 25lb. $6.35 (up .45--not too bad, but why not save a few pennies)

Other items that will be higher from .45-$2.35 higher: pinto peans, sugar, oats, hot cocoa, fruit drink mix, and pancake mix. Stock up while prices are low!

Some good news..a few items will be going DOWN in price, they are the following:
black and white dried beans, rice (by $1.90--this is a GREAT deal!), macaroni, potato flakes (by $8--WOW, GREAT price!!!), and flour (flour still less expensive at Sam's Club and Costco).

Hope this update helps you get motivated to go and stock up before prices rise. OR..for those items that are less, wait and stock up when prices will be even lower--FUN!

**Just a reminder, most canneries do NOT mandate that you are LDS to purchase items at the cannery. Call your local dry pack cannery and find out what their policies are."

As I was at the cannery today picking up some things before the rate increases, I did verify with our cannery that the price of milk is going up. (Go HERE for a GREAT video on powdered milk and its benefits, uses, and recipes.)

Reno Cannery information -

Price List

Have you ever wondered if a sale price is truly a good price? This list of prices should be able to help us all. This list comes from Prepared LDS Family and it is WONDERFUL.

I've updated everything that says "Jan. 2010" next to it and the first four pages compare Smith's case lot prices with Walmart and Costco. For the most part the Smith's case lot prices are lower.

To view the Northern Nevada price list, click HERE.

Although most items can be purchased for a lower price with a sale and a coupon, this list can be used as a base reference for regular prices. There are gaps and items I'd like to eventually add, but for now this is a good starting point.

If you have prices to add to this list, by all means let me know. Otherwise, my four boys and I will continue to wander up and down the aisles writing down prices. I'm sure we were quite the spectacle today!

Thanks, Prepared LDS Family.

Smith's (1/6-1/12)

It's the case lot sale this week at Smith's. This is not the typical timing on this sale and it caught me by surprise!

My feelings towards case lot sales are mixed. For example, a case of corn ends up being $0.50/can. This is a good price but not rock bottom. (Remember at Target a few weeks ago?)

However, it is nice to be able to buy a case at a good price and really stock up, especially if you are just starting to build your storage. Sometimes deals are in the eye of the beholder.

I'm not going to type out everything, just check your ad. Since I have my inventory done and I know what we have, I've got my eye on the mandarin oranges, spaghetti sauce, and shredded cheese.

The prices in this sale are good prices compared to Wal-Mart and Costco, which by the way I'm working on a price list for comparisons. Hopefully that will be up soon!

Save Mart (1/6-1/12)

Here are the deals I see this week at Save Mart. Let me know if I've missed anything.
Pork Butt Roast - $0.99/lb

Roma Tomatoes - $0.47/lb.

Also the $5.00/$20.00 Harris Ranch Fresh Beef coupon from last week's ad will expire this week. This week's ad shows:
Beef Top Roast - $1.99/lb (Buy 10 pounds to spend $20.00)
$5.00 store coupon
Final price: 10 pounds for $15.00, or $1.50/lb.

Be on the lookout for the prices of Harris Ranch Beef not advertised. This could make for a good deal on meat!
