I LOVE Couponing...

1 Colgate Toothpaste
1 St. Pat's stickers
3 Energizer batteries
5 Reese's Peanut-butter cups
4 Hershey's eggs (Easter baskets, not sweet tooth)
4 Reese's Mini cups
1 loaf of bread
8 Aussie Shampoo
3 Herbal Essence Shampoo
4 Aussie Gel
6 Herbal Essence Gel
3 Aussie Miracle Conditioner
6 Herbal Essence Hairspray

Total Price Paid: $6.89 (and I got $4.00 back in RR)

You're right I don't need 30 items of hair product. Some of it I will keep for my family, some of it will be for a couponing class I'm teaching, and some of it I'll be able to donate.

There are ways to give to those in need even when times are tough and we may be struggling ourselves...and that's one of the many reasons why I LOVE couponing.

My Trip to Scolari's

Here's what I got at Scolari's today.

Marshmallows - $0.50 (in clearance section)
1 Deli Fresh meat - $0.99 (in clearance section)
3 Beechnut baby meals - FREE
2 Energizer batteries - FREE
Pork Tri-tip - $8.03

Final price: $9.81
For those of you with picky Scolari's stores, I'm including a picture of my receipt. The register automatically adjusts the doubling of the coupon so that it will not go over the price of the item.

The Beechnut costs $1.59. The first coupon came off as $1.00. When the cashier pushed the key to double it, only $0.59 came off so that the final price was free but no overages. The coupon does not exceed the price of the item.

The coupon policy online states, "Offer excludes all liquor, tobacco, dairy regulated items, store coupons and coupons that exceed the value of the item." There is nothing mentioned in their policy that an item can't be free. (They are being reimbursed by the manufacturer, after all.)

Also, their online policy used to state a limit of ten coupons would be doubled each transaction but it no longer does. Their printed ad actually states, "Unlimited manufacturer's coupons up to and including $1.00."

Hopefully this will help clear up any confusion and we can all enjoy the beauty of doubling coupons at Scolari's, no matter which location we happen to shop at!

Smith's Update and My Shopping Trip

Here are a few things I noticed while I was there this morning.
(These prices reflect the discount taken when you mix and match any 8.)

Chips Ahoy - $1.79
$1.50 Nabisco cookie WYB milk (tearpad from Save Mart)
Final price: $0.29

Bumble Bee Tuna pouch - $0.49
$0.55 from 2/21 SS
Final price: $0.06 overage

Ronzoni Smart Taste pasta - $0.75
Final price: FREE

Ronzoni Healthy Harvest pasta - $0.75
Final price: $0.25 each WYB 2

Kellogg's cereal, 17 oz. (big box) - $1.99
$0.70/1 blinkies right there on the shelf
Final price: $1.29 (some had $5 in coupons inside)

The only Scotch mini rollers I could find were twin packs and were $2.50.

Here is what I got at Smith's today:

The breakdown-

Fruit Loops - $1.29 (big box and has $5 worth of coupons inside)
32 Powerade - $0.25 each
4 Del Monte tomatoes - $0.24 each
5 American Beauty Pasta - $0.49 each
1 Bumble Bee Tuna - $0.06 overage
1 Wesson Oil - $0.99
1 gal. milk - $2.19
1 Sunny D - $0.54
3 Sprite - $0.75 overage
1 Chips Ahoy- $0.29
1 Command hooks - $0.50
1 Scotch pads - $1.63
1 Scotch wand refill - $1.63

Final price: $22.65 (and I forgot to use a $1.50 coupon...)

Are you thinking I must have been rather thirsty while shopping today? Maybe I was, but I think the Powerade is a great price! I like to keep this stuff on hand for sports games, breaks from yardwork, and sick tummies.

Back in Jan. when Smith's had their case lot sale, the Powerade was $0.69 each. Wal-Mart sells their 32 oz. Powerade for $1.67 each. Costco's Kirkland brand sports drink is $0.42 each for a 20 oz. bottle.

How do I remember all of this? I'm looking at the Northern NV Price List that is linked over on the side bar. It helps me know when something is a good deal or not.

Safeway Deals (3/17-3/23)

I'm sending you back to Abundant Food Savings again this week for the Safeway matchups. (No need for me to post it if it's already out there!)

Be sure the check the ad because sometimes there are differences by region.

One of the biggest differences in our ad this week is we get $10.00 in Kohl's rewards for every $50.00 spent! (March 17-21)
Last time this promo. ran I spent $50.00 at Safeway, got my $10.00 to Kohl's, and got a FREE tie at Kohl's for my brother on a mission. (I can admit that here because he'll never read it.)

It does state that the $50.00 excludes Safeway club card savings and Safeway coupons. There is no mention of manufacturer coupons. When I did it last I made sure my total was $50.00 AFTER coupons just to be safe but I got a LOT of stuff. I'm too chicken to try it at $50.00 before coupons and then not have it work.

*UPDATED* Total must be $50.00 AFTER coupons. (Thanks, Discipline Bound!)

I'm working up my scenario right now and I'll post it once I've got it figured out. Let me know if you're planning on spending the $50.00 (or $100.00 or $150.00...) and what deals you're planning on using.

Earthquake Preparedness FHE

Here is the FHE lesson I taught last night on earthquake preparedness. I have young children, so it's pretty basic, but this can be adjusted to suit any age level.

Let me know if you would like to borrow the items I prepared for this lesson. There's no need for us all to hot glue power lines and make shoeboxes for the experiments!

Feel free to change any of this to meet your family's needs, just PLEASE prepare with your families.

Earthquake Preparedness
"If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear."
(D&C 38:30)

INTRO:
Do you know how to shake? Let me see how you shake! Good! Now we’re going to dance to some shakin’ music and I’m going to be watching for good shakers!

(Play music “Hippy Hippy Shake” {sample of song} by Georgia Satellites and DANCE.)

Wow! You really do know how to shake. Can you think of another word that means the same thing as shake? (Take suggestions *tremble, wobble, quiver, shudder, shiver* and gently guide to the word quake.)

The word quake means the same thing as shake. What do you think an EARTH quake would be? (When the earth shakes…)

DEFINITION:
An earthquake is a “sudden, rapid shaking of the earth caused by the breaking and shifting of rock beneath the earth’s surface.” (1)

We are going to learn about earthquakes so that when we have one, we will know what to do. The scriptures teach us in D&C 38:30 (read from scriptures) that "...If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear."

When we have an earthquake it might be a little scary because everything will be shaking, but we will be brave because we will know what to do and we will be ready.

GLOBE ACTIVITY: (We didn't have time for this part.)
There have recently been several earthquakes that have occurred in various areas of the world. Find each location on the globe and mark with small post-it note.

• Chile, 8.8 magnitude, 02/27/10
• Solomon Islands, 7.1 magnitude, 01/03/10
• Haiti, 7.0 magnitude, 01/15/10
• Ryukyu Islands (Japan), 7.0 magnitude, 03/08/10

Find where we live on the globe and discuss that an earthquake could happen here too.

Earthquakes can happen in the day or night. Since they can occur anytime, we might be doing lots of different things when the earthquake comes. We might be sleeping in our beds. We might be at school, or in the car, or at the store, or at work.

EXPERIMENTS:
We are going to do some experiments to help us understand what we should do during an earthquake.

  • Let’s pretend we were outside during an earthquake. Maybe you are at recess at school or playing outside. Demonstrate experiment #1. (2)
  • Let’s pretend we were in a building during an earthquake. Maybe we are at home or maybe at school. Demonstrate experiment #2 (2). Practice drop, cover, and hold! Talk about the safest places in each room of the house and practice, practice, practice. DROP, COVER, HOLD!
  • PREPARATIONS:

Place shoes and flashlight by each bed.
(Other ideas: Put together to-go bags, discuss family plan...)

    CLOSING:
We have learned about earthquakes and our family is getting ready for an earthquake. We will be prepared so we won't fear. We can always pray and Heavenly Father will help comfort us. We know what to do during an earthquake and we will be ready.

    REFRESHMENT IDEAS:

    • Milk Shakes
    • Rocky Road Ice Cream
    • Jell-O Jigglers

    RESOURCES:
    (1) Earthquake definition and checklist: (http://www.redcross.org/www-files/Documents/pdf/Preparedness/checklists/Earthquake.pdf)
    (2) Experiments: http://www.fema.gov/kids/jessnsam/index.htm

    ADDITIONAL IDEAS:

    • Earthquake Safety Activities for Children and Teachers is a booklet for teachers and includes maps, simulation script, "Shimmy-Shimmy-Shake" song to the tune of Old MacDonald, worksheets, etc. GREAT especially if need to adjust for older children. (Note, the master copies are at the end.)

    • FEMA Earthquake page has just about all the information you'll ever want to know about earthquakes if you need more research material.

*Let me know if you come up with any other ideas or how this works when you try this on your own!

    CVS and Walgreens

I don't post the weekly deals for CVS and Walgreens because there are so many other blogs that do! I mostly post the local deals that aren't found as readily on other blogs.

If you are interested in this week's CVS and WAG's deals:

Abundant Food Savings has a CVS matchup for our ad (which is different from the rest of the nation this week...)

Saving with Shellie has a nice Walgreens matchup.

    Have fun!

    Save Mart Deals (3/10-3/16)

There are a couple good deals to note this week at Save Mart with their in-ad coupons.

Fritos, Cheetos, Rold Gold, 16 o.z, Munchies - $1.25 with store coupon (limit 4)
$0.55 Rold Gold coupon from 2/28 SS
    Final price: $0.70
*I paid $5.29 for my 6 lb. bag of pretzels at Costco...$0.88/lb.

Grab and Go Grape Tomatoes - $0.69 with store coupon (limit 1)
*I could not find these ANYWHERE so I asked the produce man. He said they were having a hard time getting them because of the earthquakes (?) and didn't have any. He gave me a bigger container of grape tomatoes as a substitute at the same price. I got a $3.99 container of tomatotes for $0.69! If you don't see any at your store, it might be worth asking.

    Rung #3, Natural Disasters

It's March already? These months are just flying by. This month I am focusing on preparing my family for natural disasters. For example, earthquakes and wildfires could be potential threats in this area.

So far in my preparations (see my Food Storage Plan, page 2), I haven't geared up to leave my house. BUT it is often common for evacuations to occur alongside natural disasters.

This video got me thinking about how my family would respond to an evacuation. We have a lot of work to do. I'm not even sure we can get the whole family in the van and seat belted in ten minutes!

The Red Cross has a great Earthquake Checklist that I'm planning on going through and seeing what else we need to address for our family.

I also liked this Family Emergency Plan put out by ready.gov. We need to have a family plan set up.

These are a few of the things I'll be working on for the month of March. Feel free to join in or share any thoughts/experiences!

    Safeway (3/10-3/16)

It looks like Safeway is the place to be this week!

Check out the coupon match-ups over at Abundant Savings. (No need for me to reinvent the wheel, right?)

My favorites are the FREE fruit snacks, FREE granola bars, and FREE salad dressing!

The only thing I would note in addition to the list at Abundant Savings is our lovely $3.00/5 coupon that was in the Scolari's ad awhile back.

    Quaker Oatmeal Squares/Cap 'n Crunch - $1.00 (WYB 5)
    $3.00/5 from past Scolari's ad
    Final price: $0.40 each!

    (Thanks, Abundant Savings!)

    My Save Mart Trip

I made a quick run to Save Mart this morning (3/3) to pick up hot dogs, oranges, and carrots. There was also a cart of clearanced bread right as you walk through the front doors (next to a cart of fake Tupperware). All the bread was marked $0.50!I got:

3 bags of hot dog buns
    1 bag of English muffins
    1 loaf of bread
    2 packs of hot dogs
    1 bag of baby carrots
    4 oranges

GRAND TOTAL: $3.84!I was hoping the all-beef variety of hot dogs was included but it wasn't. The turkey, chicken, regular hot dogs, and bun length hot dogs are included and are marked $0.79.
I'm not sure if it matters, but I handed the cashier the manufacturer's coupon first and then the store coupons. No beeps, no problems, good deals! Can you guess what we're having for dinner tonight? (Sorry, Sofia...I know how you feel about hot dogs!)
