Summer Fun - D. G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program

A HUGE thank-you to Tricia for sending me this information on free performances by the Young Shakespeare Program. Here is information from their website:

2010 Young Shakespeare

The 2010 D.G. Menchetti Young Shakespeare Program presents an interactive, one hour interpretation of a Shakespeare's Classic set in contemporary times and created with the young audience member in mind. (This year they're performing The Tempest!)

Presented in collaboration with The Nevada Shakespeare Company, these performances feature a mixed cast of professional actors and young actors and will take the work of the bard to several venues throughout the Reno/Sparks, Fallon, Minden and Tahoe/Truckee regions.

*All performances are FREE to young people of all ages and their chaperones.
*Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis and reservations are required for these performances.
*The parking fee at Sand Harbor, Nevada State Park is $10 in state, $12 out of state, per vehicle.
(I think the parking is free at the other performance locations.)

So the performances are free, you just need to make reservations. View the performance schedule and more information HERE.

(Thanks, Tricia!)

June - Group Order UPDATE

Along with the freeze dried strawberries we're ordering this month, we are also putting together a group order for 5-gallon food storage buckets. These buckets are great for storing things you can buy in bulk for your food storage.

Take wheat for example. Here are the prices of hard white wheat at three well-known food storage suppliers:

Walton Feed (45 lbs. in a 6 gal. bucket): $20.50 + $21.50 shipping= $42.00
Emergency Essentials (45 lbs. in 6 gal. bucket): $36.95 + $12.00 shipping = $48.95
Honeyville (50 lbs. without bucket): $46.99 + $4.49 shipping = $51.48

BUT if you were to purchase the wheat in bulk and use your own bucket, the price would look like this:

LDS Cannery (50 lbs. without bucket): $11.60
Emergency Essentials (bucket and lid): $7.00
Total price: $18.60

The other items I buy in bulk and plan to use in my future buckets are oats, rice, sugar, flour, and beans. I'm also planning on getting a few 5-gallon buckets without lids ($5.50 each) and buying gamma lids ($7.50 each) for items I'm planning on getting into frequently. These lids make for easier access while still keeping air tight.

So, here are the items we're ordering this month and the price breakdown (there are no shipping charges):

Freeze Dried Strawberries - $13.00
5-gallon bucket with lid - $7.00
5-gallon bucket without lid - $5.50
Gamma Seal lid - $7.50

If you've already let me know about your strawberries, you're taken care of. Just let me know if you would like to order buckets/lids in addition to your strawberries. I need to know by Wednesday, June 23, as I am placing the order Thursday, June 24.

Safeway Dairy Recipe/Coupon Booklet

I know that the Safeway Dairy coupon booklet has been hard to come by. (Why a store would advertise a booklet in their ad, have signs for it in the store, and then not actually have it anywhere is beyond me.)

Luckily, my suppliers (thanks, Mom, Dad, and Sister!) delivered and I have some to share. If you would like to come by and pick up a booklet or two (or three) let me know.

The Tillamook cheese deal at Scolari's ends tomorrow, 6/16! There are also a few coupons I'm eyeing for the upcoming week like Knudsen sour cream at Scolari's and Popsicle treats at Save Mart.

I also have a few extra $1.00/2 Welch's jam coupons (making them $1.00 each for 32 oz. at Scolari's, ending 6/16) that I bought if anyone is interested in picking those up too.

Couponing 101

I was able to participate in a couponing class last night and it was so fun! For any of you new to couponing or looking for a place to start, Money Saving Mom is doing a series entitled "31 Days to a Better Grocery Budget." It is FABULOUS and full of great tips.

My top three tips for just starting out would be:

1. Set up a coupon email address. For example, mine is nat.save@hotmail.com. I use this email address when a website asks for my information before I print a coupon or when requesting free samples . This helps me avoid having my personal email inbox full of coupon-related information.

2. Start SLOWLY. Trying to get every deal at every store is exhausting and you will get burnt out. Be selective in the deals you decide to go after. Make sure it is something you can use or donate. Remember, deals always roll around again. Prayerfully evaluate your family's situation and decide what you (and your family) can handle.

When I first started couponing, I started with the drugstores and I only did one store. Once I got my feet wet and felt a little more confident, I started learning the ropes at the second drugstore. After about a year I had an ample supply of free toiletries and nonfood items and branched out to grocery stores. I did not start couponing the way I do now from the very beginning. I eased into it and every once in awhile I ease up a bit and take little breaks.

3. Use a feed reader to see many blogs/websites at a time. This will limit the amount of time you have to spend on the computer. You will not have to check multiple blogs multiple times a day to see if there are new posts! Select a handful of money-saving blogs (see my favorites on the sidebar) and add them to your google reader (or other feed reader). Don’t have a google reader account?
· Go to www.google.com/reader.
· Click on “Create an Account.” You will need an email address (see above!) and then create a password. Finish filling out the short form and accept the terms.
· Once your account is created, you can add a subscription by clicking on the “Add a Subscription” button at the top left. Copy and paste in the address of the website you would like to add to your Google Reader. You will be able to see all of these sites now at one location.
· Instead of scrolling through each post there are “next” and “previous” buttons to quickly scan any new posts. If you see a post you are interested in (and want to read it later) you can click “add star” and it will be waiting for you when you click “starred items.” You can even “search” your google reader by typing in key words in the search box at the top.

Scolari's (6/2-6/9)

Here are the deals I see for this week at Scolari’s.

Scolari's will double coupons (as long as the coupon doesn't say "do not double") up to and including $1.00! View official coupon policy HERE.

Remember, Wednesdays are “double ad” days where both the current and previous week’s ad are honored.
