My Shopping

I was welcomed home from our family vacation by a fridge full of moldy left-overs. We had no milk, eggs, bread, or bananas. I figured since I had to go buy some essentials anyway I might as well try to do some couponing too.

Bad move. I wasn't prepared at all to coupon and forgot to print my coupons before I left! Needless to say, this wasn't the best shopping trip. It happens.

At Safeway I got:
Dozen eggs - FREE for signing up at Just 4 U
Chicken Nuggets - $2.99
Bananas - $0.37/lb.
Nivea lip stuff - FREE
TOTAL: $5.03
(These were last week's deals. For the deals this week go HERE.)

At Smith's I got:
2 Hungry Man meals - FREE
1 Banquet meal - $0.78
2 Banquet meals - $1.28 each
4 Healthy Choice meals - $1.18 each
1 Steamfresh veggies - $1.45
1 Pack hamburger buns - $1.00
1 Loaf of bread - $1.00
2 Gallons of milk - $2.50 each
4 Idahoan potatoes - $1.00 for all 4 (got $1 Catalina back)
1 candy corn - $1.00 (for preschool)
3 Kid's Crest toothpaste - $0.25 each
Total: $19.03 (plus $1 back for buying 4 Idahoan)
(The frozen food deal is still going on this week. I like to buy these for my husband to take to work! See this week's Smith's deals HERE.)
GRAND TOTAL: $24.06 (plus $1.00 Catalina back)

Strawberry Freezer Jam

I've tried several different recipes for strawberry freezer jam. I've loved them all. In fact they are all so yummy, I can't really tell a difference between them. Thus, I go for easiest.
This is a NO COOK freezer jam pectin made by Ball. Just add sugar (or Splenda) to the pectin and stir in with crushed fruit.

Don't judge me. If this isn't real jam making, don't tell me. I've done the whole cooking thing. I like this method.

  • Crush 4 pounds of strawberries. (I wash, hull, and cut them in half to make mushing easier. I just use a potato masher to crush them up.)

  • Stir 1-1/2 cups of sugar and pectin packet together in a bowl.

  • Stir fruit and pectin/sugar together for 3 minutes.

  • Ladle into containers and thicken for 30 minutes.

    The end.

If this isn't hard enough for you, I have tried the recipe on the regular pectin package and it's yummy. This recipe HERE is good, too.

My Shopping

In preparation for a coupon class I was teaching I went shopping yesterday. There really are some great deals this week and I thought I'd share.

First up was Safeway. (Find details of Safeway deals HERE. Beauty and the Beast deals HERE or HERE.)I got -
8 pounds of strawberries - $1.00/lb. (Stock-up price for me. More strawberry freezer jam!)
2 Barilla pasta sauces - $2.00 each
2 Barilla pastas - Free WYB 2 Barilla sauces
Beauty and the Beast DVD - $15.00 (plus $10.00 coming back in rebates)
Jolly Time Popcorn - Free with DVD
Princess water bottle - Free with DVD
Pumpkin - Free with DVD (should have been a medium pumpkin but I couldn't find them)
TOTAL - $27.59 (will receive $10.00 back in rebates)

Next stop was Smith's. (Details on Smith's sales HERE.)
I got -
5 Philidelphia cream cheese - FREE
4 Soda - $0.54 each
1 DiGiorno pizza - $2.99
1 loaf of bread - $0.99 (because we needed it)
Total - $5.98

Last stop of the day (because I had four wonderful helper boys with me) was Kohl's. I got-
#1, 1 little boy tie - FREE
#2, 2 women's T-shirts - $0.85 for both!
#3, 1 woman's shirt and one Melissa and Doug lacing shoe - $1.28 for both!
Total - $2.13

The deal here was I used my $10.00 Kohl's coupons and bought things on clearance that were just over $10.00.

I had received one coupon in the mail and purchased two newspapers ($0.75 each) when I heard the was a coupon/sticker on the front page for $10.00 off a $10.00 purchase at Kohl's. I figured paying $0.75 for $10.00 was a good deal.

Since I had three separate coupons I had to do three separate transactions. (The coupons can't be used together to get $30.00 off.) The cashier didn't mind one bit and rung my groups up separately without a problem.

GRAND TOTAL - $37.93 (plus $10.00 back in rebates)
If I hadn't purchased things that were (1) on sale and (2) used coupons, my total for everything would have been $208.45, which I never would have paid for those things!

My Shopping at Scolari's Tonight

I got:

4 Ritz crackers - $0.50 each
4 Soy Sauce - $0.75 each
2 Nestle Cookie Dough - $0.50 each
2 Coupon Organizers - $0.50 each (in clearance section)
2 Ortega Chilis - FREE
2 OM Beef Hot Dogs - $1.00 each
1 Knudsen Sour Cream - $0.79
2 Padrinos Chips - FREE
8 Corn - $0.16 each
8 Gala apples - $0.99/lb.
1 Watermelon - $2.99

Total before club card and coupons: $78.65
After card: $37.74 (NEVER shop here without a club card!)
GRAND TOTAL after coupons: $16.04

My cashier tonight (Veronica) was AWESOME. She told me their new policy is not to accept any internet coupons with the word "FREE" on them...even buy one get one free. Good to know.

I also noticed when you are using an in-ad coupon (like for the Ritz crackers) it has to be keyed in for each item you buy. The limit on the crackers was four and I got four, so she keyed the store coupon in four times. I've had times when it only came off once and I couldn't figure out why.

I've learned at Scolari's it's all about your checker. I have better luck at night when the store isn't so busy. I also like to "fly under the radar" so it's not so obvious that I'm getting great deals. It's not as suspicious when you buy lots of things (like the produce that is a decent price, as well as the coupon items) versus walking in and just trying to "buy" only the free stuff.

Smith's Case Lot Sale!

The case lot sale begins today at Smith's. This is a GREAT way to stock up when prices are low.
There is a price comparison on the sidebar (Northern NV Price List) that compares the prices of the Smith's case lot sale to Costco and Wal-Mart. {It hasn't been updated since Jan. and I'm curious to see if the case lot prices are the same as earlier this year.
