Scolari's: Amerigas Propane Exchange $8.99!

The propane on the barbecue is running low!  I noticed that Scolari's is advertising their propane exchange at $15.99 this week.  Throw in a rebate and coupon and we've got a sweet deal!

AmeriGas Propane Exchange - $15.99
$2.00 printable coupon (no longer available)
$5.00 mail in rebate
Final price:  $8.99!

Even without the coupon it's a good deal.  If you see a lower price on these exchanges around town, please let us know.  I only know the price at Scolari's because it's advertised this week in their ad.

We also use propane for our portable heater (if you're a charcoal kind of griller...)  It's a great food storage/emergency preparedness item to have on hand.

Ben Franklin: 70% off Going out of Business

I just got a call from Cynde that Ben Franklin Crafts in Sparks (530 Greenbrae Dr.) is going out of business and everything in the store is 70% off.

She was able to score LOTS of cute fabric and mentioned there are still scrapbook supplies and shelving too. If you're needing crafting materials you may want to head over!

Cynde said they are planning on being open for one more week and closing 8/13. The phone number is 775-331-5755 if you want to call first or get more information.

(Thanks, Cynde!)

Grassroots Books: FREE Books for Everyone

Right now Grassroots Books if offering a free book for everyone!  For more information, visit their site HERE.

(Thanks, Cynde!)

I'll never forget the time my oldest son declared loudly at Grassroots Books, "This is the best day of my life!" when he received a Harry Potter book for free.  Silly boy.

FREE Clothing Fair - Saturday August 6th

The Annual Sparks Stake Clothing Fair is this week! This is a great opportunity to clean out your closets and donate unused clothing, as well as "shop" (for no charge) for clothing items for you and your family.

Clothing donations can be dropped off at the LDS church (2955 Rock Blvd, Sparks, NV) any time from 2:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 5th.

"Shopping" is open to the community from 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m on Saturday, August 6th.

You do not have to donate clothes to be able to shop. You do not have to show ID, be a member of this church, or give your firstborn child. There are no strings attached.

I've been to this clothing fair before when my boys were moving up in size and I needed a few things that fit. The clothing was arranged by size and it was fun to sort through and find treasures. It's like my boys keep quoting from Bedtime Stories, "For FREEEEEEE? Sounds good to MEEEEEE!"

Hope to see you there and feel free to spread the word to your friends and neighbors!

Warehouse Booksale

Thanks to Shirley for sending me the information on this library booksale!

This weekend (March 12 and 13) there will be a booksale to benefit the Washoe County Libraries at 125 Gentry, Reno.

Here's the info from the Friends of the Library website.

Warehouse Booksale:

Friday & Saturday, March 12 & 13

In these tough economic times, Friends Booksales are great opportunities to take advantage of a wide selection of inexpensive books, movies, and music, and at the same time help the library. Prices start at just 50 cents, with with ficton, non-fiction, cookbooks, children's books, books about Nevada and the West, and lots of jigsaw puzzles, as well as loads of "nearly new" books and both rare and autographed collectibles.

This all volunteer, non-profit group's sales are generally offered on the second weekend of the month, rain, sleet or snow, at 125 Gentry Way (off South Virginia) in the rear of the building.

For additional information, call 324-5522 or see the website HERE.

Grand Sierra Resort: 2 Free Nights!

(Update: I guess now the code is not working for locals. Sorry! I booked our rooms back in January and the total balance was $0.00.)

You can get up to two FREE nights at the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino using the code 2FCH at checkout.

This offer works for dates now through March 31, 2011. Some dates are already sold out and it looks like it doesn't work over the weekends, weekdays only from what I can tell.

When you get to the main page of the GSR website just click on your arrival and departure dates (up at the top) and add the offer code in the third box. Voila! Free room! I did have to enter my credit card information but my grand total was $0.00.

We're going on a family vacation staycation next week to the Grand Sierra Resort! There's lots to do there: bowling, movies, laser tag, arcade, golf, go karts, ultimate rush, and spa. Sounds like fun!

Wal-Mart Fabric 50% Off

If you're in the market for fabric, you may want to check out this deal sent to me by Janet:

Just wanted to let you know that I was at the Walmart on Northtowne today and they had all their fabric and ribbon (by the yard) on sale 50%. The store is closing October 12th. There is still a pretty good selection. I had to force myself to put some back because I had absolutely no use for it. I picked up fleece for blankets, some other fabric for pillowcases and aprons. I wish I had more to make because some of the little girl fabric was so stinking cute!

Thanks, Janet!

Natalie A. emailed me about a HOT deal she discovered at Save Mart. Here's the scoop:

There is currently (4/24-5/7) a catalina running at Save Mart:

Buy any Kellogg's cereal (8 oz. or larger)
Buy 3 get $2 coupon off your next order
Buy 4 get $3 coupon off your next order
Buy 5 get $4 coupon off your next order

Here's where it gets good. The 14 oz boxes of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes are on "managers special" for $0.93 cents each!

SO... (5) Frosted Flakes @ $0.93= $4.65 and get a $4.00 coupon back!

Or if you have 2 $1.00/3 coupons...
(6) Frosted Flakes= $5.58
$2.00 from 4/11 RP or printable coupon! (use 2 coupons)
Final Price: $3.58 and get $4.00 coupon back!

Even without coupons this is a SWEET deal.

I don't know if this "manager's special" is only at the Sparks store or if other locations may find the same pricing. Let us know if you try this at a different store!

Oh, and by the way, pick yourself up a head of lettuce while you're at Save Mart...they're only $0.33 each this week (ends 4/27). Guess who's having BBQ chicken salad for dinner tomorrow?

A HUGE thanks to Natalie A. for sharing this deal. If you find other deals while you're out and about, let us know!

Cannery Price Changes

Just a heads up that the prices at the LDS Cannery are changing effective THIS Saturday (01/16). If you live here locally, that means you will only be able to can at the current prices on Thursday, as our cannery is only open on Saturdays and Thursdays.

From My Food Storage Deals:

"The items that will be increasing in price are the following:

*Dry Powdered Milk 25lb. $35.40 (up $10 from before--stock up NOW before the 16th to get the AMAZINGLY low price of $24.80!!)

*Hard Red Wheat 25lb. $6.35 (up .45--not too bad, but why not save a few pennies)

Other items that will be higher from .45-$2.35 higher: pinto peans, sugar, oats, hot cocoa, fruit drink mix, and pancake mix. Stock up while prices are low!

Some good news..a few items will be going DOWN in price, they are the following:
black and white dried beans, rice (by $1.90--this is a GREAT deal!), macaroni, potato flakes (by $8--WOW, GREAT price!!!), and flour (flour still less expensive at Sam's Club and Costco).

Hope this update helps you get motivated to go and stock up before prices rise. OR..for those items that are less, wait and stock up when prices will be even lower--FUN!

**Just a reminder, most canneries do NOT mandate that you are LDS to purchase items at the cannery. Call your local dry pack cannery and find out what their policies are."

As I was at the cannery today picking up some things before the rate increases, I did verify with our cannery that the price of milk is going up. (Go HERE for a GREAT video on powdered milk and its benefits, uses, and recipes.)

Reno Cannery information -

Price List

Have you ever wondered if a sale price is truly a good price? This list of prices should be able to help us all. This list comes from Prepared LDS Family and it is WONDERFUL.

I've updated everything that says "Jan. 2010" next to it and the first four pages compare Smith's case lot prices with Walmart and Costco. For the most part the Smith's case lot prices are lower.

To view the Northern Nevada price list, click HERE.

Although most items can be purchased for a lower price with a sale and a coupon, this list can be used as a base reference for regular prices. There are gaps and items I'd like to eventually add, but for now this is a good starting point.

If you have prices to add to this list, by all means let me know. Otherwise, my four boys and I will continue to wander up and down the aisles writing down prices. I'm sure we were quite the spectacle today!

Thanks, Prepared LDS Family.

Local Thrift Stores

Secondhand shopping is a great way to safe money. Even though I still haven't had a chance to go by these thrift stores to check it all out, I wanted to post this advice from Sofia L. I'm just going to copy what she said because she says it so well!

"Savers on Mondays has reinstated their 99 cent Mondays with additional half price tags. So certain color tags will be 99 cents no matter what the price marked and then another color will be half priced.

At the Goodwill bargain bin all children's books are a quarter. Plus I love getting children's swimsuits there (I know that sounds nasty and ghetto but that's why God made color safe bleach) because the way clothing is priced by the pound the swimsuits end up being 20 cents. It's hood there, just to forewarn. Even if you don't have asthma, you might have an asthma attack because of smells."

Too funny. I'll wear my meat-handling mask to help with the smell when I go. Thanks for the tips, Sofia! Any other money saving tips out there?

Cream Cheese Deal

At Scolari’s on the Ziploc holiday display at the front of the store there are tearpads with coupons and recipes on them.

The coupon reads, “$1.25 off when you buy any THREE (3) participating KRAFT dessert products,” and displays pictures of Jell-o, Baker’s chocolate, and Philadelphia cream cheese.

You’ll want to pick up a few of these so you can score some inexpensive cream cheese.

Here’s what I’m planning on doing:

The Philadelphia cream cheese is $0.98 this week (11/18-11/26) at Sak ‘N Save. I’m going to price match that at Wal-Mart, buy three, and use my $1.25 coupon. Here’s the breakdown:

(3) Philadelphia cream cheese at $0.98 = $2.94
$1.25 tearpad coupon
Final price: $1.69 for three…$0.56 each!

While cream cheese does not freeze well, it does keep for long after the expiration date if still sealed closed. Be sure to check the dates on the ones you're planning on buying too.

I don’t know how much the Jell-o or Baker’s chocolate is at Wal-Mart. If anyone finds out, please leave a comment letting us know. There are no size requirements so I’m thinking this could be a great coupon for the small Jell-o too.

BOOKS!

"I almost never read a borrowed book. I don't like to read borrowed books because I don't want to read a book without underlining things I want to remember. Since one doesn't underline someone else's book, I feel that if a book is worth reading, it is worth owning."
Boyd K. Packer, Teach Ye Diligently, pg. 197

There's nothing better than a good book...except maybe getting a good deal on a good book!

Janet H. emailed me about a local used book shop, "Grassroots Books, located at 660 Grove Street (near Reno Costco). They are a used book store with lots of new stuff too! Typical prices range from $0.99-$2.99. This week they are having a parking lot sale where they will have 15,000 books all at $0.99. It runs Nov. 18-22 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m." Sounds like this could be a bargain on good books. I also read on their website that they buy DVDs, books, and music, so that might be something to look into as well. Thanks for the info. Janet!
